As an expert witness, John A. Budny, MBA, PHD, serves attorneys and their clients in California and across the United States. While Dr. Budny is qualified to assess the toxicity caused by all types of chemicals, he is, based on his educational experience, qualified to determine whether or not a cause and effect relationship exists between medications and adverse medical events.
Dr. Budny provides a wide range of services to legal professionals. From expert witness testimony to assisting in the evaluation of a case, he has the medical and scientific background needed to provide attorneys with a scientific depth and perspective for their cases. He has the necessary expertise in toxicologyto provide competent opinions about the adverse consequences of medications or other xenobiotics.
Dr. Budny provides competent opinions based upon recognized and accepted scientific principles and the latest medical findings. He determines if prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, drugs of abuse, and bacterial infections or their treatments are the cause of adverse medical or health events.
Dr. Budny's background includes a Ph.D. in basic medical science and a 30-year career as a practicing toxicologist. His unique perspective combines the science of toxicology with medical knowledge, allowing him to fully understand all ramifications of an adverse medical event caused by prescription errors, faulty medications, or failure in the health care delivery process.
More than 80,000 chemicals are registered for use in the United States. Each year, an estimated 2,000 new ones are introduced for use in such everyday items as foods, personal care products, prescription drugs, household cleaners, and lawn care products. We do not know the effects of many of these chemicals on our health, yet we may be exposed to them while manufacturing, distributing, using, and disposing of them or when they become pollutants in our air, water, or soil. Relatively few chemicals are thought to pose a significant risk to human health. However, safeguarding public health depends on identifying both what the effects of these chemicals are and at what levels of exposure they may become hazardous to humans—that is, understanding their toxicology.

The Society of Toxicology (SOT) is a professional and scholarly organization of scientists from academic institutions, government, and industry representing the great variety of scientists who practice toxicology in the US and abroad. SOT is committed to creating a safer and healthier world by advancing the science of toxicology. The Society promotes the acquisition and utilization of knowledge in toxicology, aids in the protection of public health, and facilitates disciplines. The Society has a strong commitment to education in toxicology and to the recruitment of students and new members into the profession.
The American College of Toxicology is a professional organization of about 1000 toxicologists who work in industry, pharmaceutical and biotech companies, government regulatory agencies, or as consultants. ACT provides a forum for collegial exchange of information. ACT holds their Annual Meeting every November. Other educational opportunities include courses and webinars held throughout the year and around the globe. The latest scientific information of interest is published in the ACT journal, the International Journal of Toxicology.
Mission Statement
The mission of the American College of Toxicology is to educate, lead, and serve professionals in toxicology and related disciplines by promoting the exchange of information and perspectives on applied toxicology and safety assessment.
The International Journal of Toxicology (IJT) publishes timely, peer-reviewed papers on current topics important to toxicologists. Six bi-monthly International Journal of Toxicologyissues cover a wide range of topics, including contemporary issues in toxicology, safety assessments, novel approaches to toxicological testing, mechanisms of toxicity, biomarkers, and risk assessment. IJT also publishes invited reviews on contemporary topics, and features articles based on symposia. This journal is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE)
